India has 29 states and 7 union territories. There are a number of well-structured National Disease Control/Elimination Programs that are implemented by the state governments following national policies. There are three tiers of government-funded health care system throughout India (primary health care system having network of primary health centers and subcenters in rural areas, urban health centers, and urban health posts or dispensaries in the towns functional under municipal councils and corporations; district hospitals for secondary care; and medical colleges and hospitals for tertiary care). Among private health care providers, there are general practitioners and quacks besides hospitals and poly-clinics that are professionally managed.
